WorkFlowy is an organisational tool that makes life easier Enjoy! *** ## Use Apple Shortcuts to convert Todoist task, project, filter and label links so as to open in-app from other apps **Last updated: 19 Feb 2025** - As of desktop version 9.10.0, Doist added support for filters and labels in desktop URLs. As a result, if you used the previous Shortcut I provided, please read below and grab the new version which incorporates these new conversions. Thanks. ### The problem If, like me, you use Todoist with the Apple desktop and mobile apps exclusively - not in browser - you might have found it frustrating that copying a link to a Todoist task or project creates a link that looks this. `https://app.todoist.com/app/task/i-am-a-task-192NTA2HgTCm57hx` The issue being, if you paste that link into another app to link back to Todoist, clicking on the link will **open Todoist in the browser** on macOS, even if you have the desktop app installed. That's not what I want. I never use it on the web. ### Shortcuts to the rescue! Todoist has its own [URL scheme](https://developer.todoist.com/guides/#desktop-app-url-schemes). These URLs **now work both on iOS** ***and MacOS***, which is great. So, if our task above was formatted as per the below, when clicking on it from within another app, it would open *in the Todoist app* on the respective Apple platform. `todoist://task?id=192NTA2HgTCm57hx` As well as tasks, we can convert project, filter and label links, too. ### The solution To use the shortcut, first copy the Todoist link as you would normally do, then [import and run this shortcut](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/7e2848af121843488d5dfa4eddd7055c). It will act on the clipboard's contents, extracting the randomised string at the end of the task, converting it from a web link into a URL scheme format and replacing the clipboard with it. If you now paste your clipboard's contents into another app, say, Drafts or Apple Notes, clicking on the pasted link will open the task in the app (iOS or macOS) and **NOT** in the browser. The Shortcut will detect if you are converting a task, project, filter or label link and handle them appropriately. **Note** - You can now copy a link to a section in Todoist, but unfortunately, there is still no (documented) URL scheme for sections. So if you attempt to use the Shortcut on a section's link it will notify you and advise that it's unable to make the conversion. ### Conclusion I don't doubt that with all the fiddling Doist undertakes with Todoist – I've had to rewrite this webpage and the Shortcut **several times already** – this functionality will likely break, again, at some point.
